DICKINSON COUNTY, KANSAS — A rural Kansas road. A mailbox. An evening routine done a thousand times before. And then, in seconds, everything gone.
The victim has been identified as Katherine Worthen, 80, of rural Solomon, Kansas, whose life was cut short during an ordinary moment that countless Americans experience every day.
According to information released by the Kansas Highway Patrol, the deadly collision occurred at approximately 7:54 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, along Solomon Road, north of Interstate 70 in Dickinson County, near 185 Solomon Road.
A SIMPLE TRIP TO THE MAILBOX TURNS DEADLY
Investigators say Worthen had driven her Nissan Rogue to the area of her mailbox near 185 Solomon Road.
She reportedly parked her SUV in the northbound lane, facing south, before stepping outside to retrieve her mail — a practice common on rural Kansas roads where mailboxes sit along the shoulder.
At approximately the same time, a northbound 2013 Honda Civic approached the stationary Nissan.
The Honda was driven by 47-year-old Andrea Macoubrie of Clay Center, Kansas.
According to the Highway Patrol’s preliminary account, the Honda swerved to the right as it approached Worthen’s parked vehicle.
In a devastating sequence of events, the Honda struck both the Nissan Rogue and Worthen, who was standing outside her vehicle.
Dispatch audio from the scene captured the horror: Emergency crews responded to a possible traffic-related medical emergency near the block of Solomon Road, where a pedestrian was reportedly struck. “No pulse, no breathing, severe head trauma,” responders reported on arrival.
Worthen suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced at the scene.
An ordinary evening task had suddenly become a deadly roadside tragedy.
OTHER DRIVER TRANSPORTED TO HOSPITAL
Authorities reported that Macoubrie was transported to a hospital in Abilene for treatment of suspected minor injuries.
The Kansas Highway Patrol indicated that she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the collision.
The circumstances that caused the Honda to swerve have not been fully explained in the information released so far.
It remains unclear whether visibility, distraction, speed, or another factor contributed to the crash. At 7:54 p.m. in late October, dusk had fallen over Dickinson County — rural roads often have limited lighting, narrow shoulders, and vehicles traveling at highway speeds. A stopped vehicle or pedestrian near the roadway can create a dangerous situation in seconds.
No criminal charges have been confirmed in the reporting reviewed Thursday morning. The Kansas Highway Patrol’s investigation is continuing.
A HEARTBREAKING REMINDER OF HOW QUICKLY LIFE CAN CHANGE

But Wednesday evening’s tragedy serves as a painful reminder that even the most familiar routines can carry unexpected dangers.
