SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY — The Yoga Mandali community is grieving the loss of a cherished member, Julie Learned, a valued yoga teacher and friend whose presence brought warmth, compassion, and grounding to so many.
Julie was a valued member of the Yoga Mandali community at 454 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY, where she was known as a yoga teacher and friend. Her connection to the studio brought her into the lives of students and fellow community members who are now grieving her loss.
For those who knew her, Julie was so much more than a teacher on a schedule. She was the heart of her classes.
A Heart-Centered Teacher
Julie’s yoga classes were described by Yoga Mandali as heart-centered and inviting everyone to come as they are. That philosophy was not just a tagline — it was how she lived and taught.
She was a lifelong mover. Julie began practicing yoga over 20 years ago while modern dancing in Seattle after a childhood filled with gymnastics in Ohio. She was a 200-hour certified yoga teacher, as well as a professor of education at the University at Albany.
To her teaching, Julie brought a deep understanding of how people learn and build awareness. She brought a lot of empathy, compassion, and love, too. Her invitation to students was always simple and profound: Come get grounded, breathe, explore, strengthen, and grow. All are welcome.
It was that welcoming spirit that made her classes a refuge. Students did not just come to stretch — they came to feel seen, to be held in community, and to learn.
A Community Grieving
The loss is being felt deeply across the Yoga Mandali community. As a valued member of the studio, Julie’s connection brought her into the lives of countless students and fellow community members who are now mourning.
In a studio built on breath and togetherness, her absence leaves a quiet space on the mat and in the hearts of those who practiced beside her. Fellow teachers, students, and friends are sharing memories of her kindness, her thoughtful guidance, and the gentle strength she brought to every class.
The Yoga Mandali community, known for its close-knit and supportive nature, is now coming together to support one another in grief, just as Julie taught them to support one another in practice.
Details regarding a memorial gathering or ways to honor Julie’s life will be shared by Yoga Mandali and her family when available.
She will be remembered as a teacher, a friend, a lifelong mover, and a compassionate soul who invited everyone to come exactly as they are.
May her memory be a grounding breath for all who knew her.
