Winter Haven School Bus Crash: 10th-Grade Student and Jeep Driver Killed in Tragic Morning Crash on Lucerne Park Road

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A routine Monday morning turned into a nightmare for Winter Haven.

A multi-vehicle traffic collision involving a school bus carrying nearly 40 passengers resulted in two fatalities, and left several others hospitalized Monday morning in Polk County, Florida.

The school bus tragedy in Winter Haven left a student and another driver dead. Families are grieving, children are recovering, and so many lives have been changed forever.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 6:13 a.m. Monday, October 5, on Lucerne Park Road, also known as State Road 544, near the Walmart distribution center on the northeast side of Winter Haven.

Investigators say a white Chevrolet Malibu drifted into oncoming traffic, hitting the rear of a school bus. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. on Winter Haven Road when a Chevrolet Malibu crossed the center line and collided with a Winter Haven High School bus carrying 37 students. The collision caused the bus to roll over after hitting an oncoming Jeep, resulting in the Jeep driver’s death.

At the time of the crash, the bus was transporting 37 Winter Haven High School students, the driver, and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter along its scheduled route. Emergency responders dispatched to the scene in Winter Haven shortly after 6:15 a.m. located the bus turned over on its roof following an impact with an oncoming vehicle.

Two people died: a 10th-grade female student on the bus and a person in the Jeep. Polk Sheriff Grady Judd described the student, a sophomore from Winter Haven High School, as “a beautiful girl”.

The bus then collided head-on with a Jeep, causing it to overturn and catch fire.

I’m not going to claim this young woman was on her phone or speculate about what investigators haven’t established. But I also don’t believe calling something an accident should automatically end the conversation about responsibility.

We recently saw a grandmother charged after unintentionally leaving her granddaughter in a vehicle, resulting in the child’s death. I understand these cases involve different circumstances and legal standards. Still, it raises a fair question that many in Polk County are now asking: when does a tragic mistake become negligence that warrants criminal charges?

Personally, many in the community hope charges are brought if the evidence supports them. Not because they want another life destroyed, but because the lives lost deserve accountability and a thorough investigation.

A westbound Chevrolet Malibu crossed the center line around 6:15 a.m. for reasons still under investigation and hit the bus near its rear wheels. Polk County Sheriff’s Office has not yet said what caused the Malibu to cross the center line.

You can have compassion for the person who caused a tragedy and still believe they should answer for their actions. Both can be true.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. No charges had been announced as of Tuesday.

Praying for every family affected. May they both rest peacefully ❤️🕊️

Our thoughts are with the family of the 10th-grade Winter Haven High student, the Jeep driver, the injured children, the bus driver and her 9-year-old daughter, and every first responder who witnessed this heartbreaking scene
