PEDESTRIAN KILLED IN GUAYAMA AFTER BEING STRUCK BY CAR – VICTIM IDENTIFIED AS ROMAN D. CASH
EAST ST. LOUIS, IL โ A car crashed and caught fire early Tuesday on the Eads Bridge, killing a 42-year-old man and shutting down the historic bridge in both directions.
Calvin Dye Sr., coroner for St. Clair County, said the victim was identified as Roman D. Cash, 42, of Fairview Heights.
According to authorities, the crash occurred at about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday morning on the Eads Bridge. Video from the scene showed a crashed vehicle engulfed and police lights on the bridge as crews responded to the fiery wreck.
Two people were in the car at the time of the crash, including a woman who was pulled from the wreckage by East St. Louis police Officer Jaylon Lee in a heroic rescue effort. Her condition has not been released.
Roman D. Cash was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash and fire. The St. Clair County Coroner confirmed his identity following the early morning tragedy.
The crash closed both directions of the Eads Bridge for hours Tuesday morning while police and fire crews investigated and cleared the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The Eads Bridge, which connects St. Louis, Missouri and East St. Louis, Illinois, is a major crossing over the Mississippi River and was shut down after the crash.
Family and friends are now mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Roman, a 42-year-old man from Fairview Heights whose life was cut short in an instant.
