GUAYAMA, Puerto Rico — A 52-year-old woman has died after being struck by a vehicle while walking along the shoulder of the Dulce Sueño bypass in Guayama, Puerto Rico, police said.
The victim was identified as Lisa Yanet León Álvarez, 52, of Guayama.
According to investigators, the tragic crash occurred on the Dulce Sueño bypass when the driver of a 2007 black Toyota Corolla was traveling south to north and lost control of the vehicle.
The car subsequently struck León Álvarez with its left side as she was walking in the opposite direction along the roadway shoulder — a place where she should have been safe.
León Álvarez suffered severe injuries as a result of the impact and died at the scene from her injuries.
Police confirmed that the driver of the Toyota Corolla remained at the scene while authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision and cooperated with officers.
The investigation is now being handled by Police Agent Juan Pacheco of the Guayama Highway Patrol Division, along with prosecutor Jessica Gotay. Agent Ferrer Olivera of the Technical Services Division processed the crash scene.
Authorities have not said whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the driver losing control, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
A walk that should have been routine turned fatal, leaving a family and a community in Guayama mourning the loss of a 52-year-old woman whose life was cut short in an instant.
