PAPILLION, NE — A bright light that inspired an entire football community has gone out far too soon.
Liam Settles, a 13-year-old from Papillion, Nebraska and devoted Nebraska Huskers superfan, has passed away following a courageous battle with pediatric brain cancer.
Liam was diagnosed in 2024 with a high-grade glioma, an aggressive form of pediatric brain cancer. What followed was a journey marked by unimaginable strength, positivity, and faith that touched thousands far beyond his hometown.
Throughout his illness, Liam became widely known within the Nebraska football community for his strength, positivity, and deep love for the Huskers. His journey inspired many through his connection with the Team Jack Foundation and his use of the #LiamStrong message, which spread across social media as a symbol of hope and resilience.
Despite his young age, Liam built meaningful relationships with Nebraska student-athletes and became a familiar and cherished presence around the program. Players, coaches, and fans often shared moments and messages of support, recognizing the courage he showed throughout his treatment.
He wasn’t just a fan in the stands — he was family to the Huskers.
Following news of his passing, the Nebraska football community paid tribute to him during a game against Maryland, with players honoring his memory through personal gestures on the field and emotional postgame reflections. His impact was felt not just as a fan, but as someone who deeply connected with the team on a human level.
Liam’s story has continued to resonate beyond football, drawing attention to pediatric brain cancer awareness and the work of organizations like the Team Jack Foundation, which supports research and families affected by similar diagnoses.
Liam was spotlighted at the 12th Annual Team Jack Gala as a brave young fighter, an event that raised over $800,000 for childhood brain cancer research.
Loved ones remember Liam not for how he died, but for how he lived — with a smile that lit up every room, a love for the Huskers that never wavered, and a bravery that inspired grown men in helmets and pads.
He is remembered for his love of the Huskers, his bravery during illness, and the inspiration he gave to those around him.
At just 13 years old, Liam Settles taught an entire state what it means to fight, to love, and to believe. A bright light, gone too soon — but his #LiamStrong legacy will continue to shine.
Our most heartfelt and deepest condolences go out to the Settles family, the Papillion community, the Nebraska Huskers family, and everyone who loved Liam.
