Mike “Big Mike” Smith Obituary: Beloved Hudson VFD Firefighter Dies After Medical Emergency Following 30 Years of Service

HUDSON — Hudson VFD has lost a great friend, a brother, and a longtime member of our department, Mike “Big Mike” Smith.

Mike passed away last night following a medical emergency.

He dedicated more than 30 years of his life to the fire department and was a huge part of our annual Haunted House for more than 25 years. His dedication, friendship, and countless contributions to our department and community will never be forgotten.

For more than three decades, Big Mike was more than a firefighter — he was family. He answered the call when his community needed him most, showing up for emergencies, for training, for community events, and for his fellow firefighters without hesitation. To those in Hudson VFD, he wasn’t just a member with seniority; he was a mentor, a protector, and a brother.

And for more than 25 years, he helped bring to life one of the department’s most cherished traditions — the annual Haunted House. Generations of families in Hudson knew his work there, even if they didn’t know his name. It was his dedication behind the scenes, year after year, that helped make it a success for the community he loved so dearly.

Mike will be dearly missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

In the fire service, they say you never truly work alone — you work alongside brothers and sisters. Last night, Hudson VFD lost one of its best. The empty spot in the firehouse, the stories that will be told for years to come, and the countless lives he touched are a testament to a life lived in service to others.

Please keep Mike’s family, friends, and the entire Hudson VFD family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Funeral arrangements and memorial service information for Mike “Big Mike” Smith will be announced by his family and the Hudson VFD at a later date.

Rest easy, brother. We’ll take it from here.
