BARTON, Ala. — The Shoals community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Emmalee “Emma” Mizell, a Mississippi resident who served as a nurse at the Colbert County Jail in Tuscumbia and was killed in a crash Tuesday evening.
Authorities said the fatal collision happened at approximately 6 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 72 and Barton Road, where Mizell’s vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler.
Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine confirmed Mizell’s identity and said she worked for a contractor providing health care services to inmates at the jail.
Balentine remembered Emma as a warm and compassionate person who genuinely cared about others.
“She was just a great person that was always very friendly and had a genuine care and concern for others,” the sheriff said.
Her death has reportedly been felt throughout the sheriff’s office, including among employees and inmates who came to know her through her work.
Balentine said several members of the department and some inmates were struggling deeply with the news, describing Emma as a kind soul and a blessing to those she served.
Although her work placed her inside a correctional facility, those who knew her remembered the compassion she brought to the people in her care. Her role allowed her to provide medical attention and human kindness to inmates and staff alike.
Emma’s death now leaves family, friends, coworkers, and members of the jail community grieving a woman remembered for her friendliness, generosity, and concern for others.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
