BILLINGS, Mont. — Authorities and family members have identified 44-year-old Alan Smith as the man who allegedly killed eight relatives during a Sunday evening family gathering at a home in the Billings area, a devastating tragedy that claimed four children and members of four generations of the family.

The victims included Megan Ghekiere, Smith’s younger sister; her children Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7; her stepchildren Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12; Smith’s parents, Dana and Barbara “Barb” Smith; and his 92-year-old grandmother, Evelyn Smith.

Police responded Sunday evening after reports of gunfire. The home was then engulfed in flames, leaving investigators facing an especially difficult scene as the structure was heavily damaged by the fire. Authorities later confirmed eight victims, while Smith suffered a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to family members and investigators.
