GONZALES, La. — The Gonzales community is mourning the tragic deaths of 17-year-old Tegan Daigle and 21-year-old Jared Downey, who were fatally shot in a violent incident on East Caldwell Street.
Authorities responding to reports of gunfire discovered both victims deceased near Downey’s home. Investigators later identified 17-year-old Joseph Appiah as a suspect in the case. Appiah faces two counts of first-degree murder, along with additional charges connected to the investigation.
According to investigators, witness accounts and surveillance footage showed a black BMW at the scene that left shortly after the shooting. Authorities have said suspected illegal drug activity may have played a role and described the circumstances as consistent with an apparent ambush or robbery-style attack.
Appiah also faces charges including criminal conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute, aggravated assault with a firearm, and related firearms offenses.
Two additional people remain under investigation as persons of interest, authorities said.
The deaths of Tegan and Jared have left their families and friends facing an unimaginable loss. Tegan was only 17, while Jared was 21—two young lives cut short by gun violence.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting, determine the roles of everyone involved, and establish a possible motive.
The case has also prompted discussion about the level of attention given to local violent crimes, with some community members calling for broader awareness of the deaths and the impact of gun violence on families and neighborhoods.
