Oakland Stabbings Turn Fatal: One Dead and Four Injured in Series of Attacks Across East Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. — A series of stabbings across East Oakland Monday evening left one person dead and four others injured, prompting a major police response and a homicide investigation, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Chief Beere provided an update following the deadly violence, which unfolded across several locations on August 24, 2026.

The first incident was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of 38th Avenue inside Cesar Chavez Park. The incident was initially reported as a shooting, but officers who arrived determined that the victim had actually suffered a stabbing.

Officers immediately began lifesaving measures, but the victim died at the scene.

Police then located a second stabbing victim near 38th Avenue and San Leandro Street. While officers were responding to that location, they were notified by BART Police that a third victim had been found near the Fruitvale BART Station.

Investigators were subsequently alerted to two additional stabbing victims near 39th Avenue and International Boulevard.

Just before 8 p.m., community members directed officers toward the 1500 block of 39th Avenue, where police safely took the suspected attacker into custody. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Of the five victims, two were reported to be in stable condition while two others were in critical condition. The fifth victim died at the scene.

The Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section is now conducting a follow-up investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person who died, pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the series of attacks and whether the incidents were connected.

The violence has left residents and the broader Oakland community shaken as four injured victims continue their recovery and one family faces the devastating loss of a loved one.
