WEZEP, Netherlands — A school trip to Paris took a terrifying turn Monday morning after a coach carrying more than 50 German high-school students and four teachers collided with a delivery van on a major highway in the eastern Netherlands.
Dutch police said 16 people were injured in the crash on the A28 near Wezep, east of Amsterdam. Eight people, including the driver of the delivery van, suffered serious injuries, while the remaining victims were reported to have sustained minor injuries. All of those injured were transported to hospitals for treatment.
The crash happened at approximately 4:20 a.m. local time Monday. According to reports citing local police, the coach collided with the delivery van, broke through a guardrail, and overturned onto its side.
It remained unclear how many of the injured were students.
The coach was reportedly carrying students from a school in Schönberg, northern Germany, who were traveling to Paris as part of a school trip. The students belonged to two Grade 12 classes, typically made up of teenagers around 17 and 18 years old.
The school said there had been no reports of life-threatening injuries and that everyone involved was receiving comprehensive medical care.
