SUMNER COUNTY, Kan. — The Atlanta and Central of Burden communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Shyann Clark, 18, a recent high school graduate whose life was tragically cut short in a fatal crash on the Kansas Turnpike Friday night.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), Clark was killed after being struck by a vehicle on the turnpike in Sumner County shortly before 8:15 p.m. Friday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified Clark as a resident of Atlanta, Kansas, and a May graduate of Central of Burden High School. She was remembered as an active and involved student who made a lasting impression through her participation in softball, yearbook, cheerleading, and Student Council. She was also honored as Miss Atlanta 2025, representing her community with pride.
The KHP preliminary crash report stated that Clark had been parked along the left barrier of the Kansas Turnpike due to suspected mechanical issues. Investigators reported that she was crossing the highway from the left lane toward the right lane when she was struck by a northbound van driven by 31-year-old Fernando Martinez Gonzalez of Kansas City, Missouri.
News of Shyann’s passing has left family, friends, classmates, teammates, and community members devastated as they grieve the loss of a young woman with so much ahead of her.
