PENNSYLVANIA — The 213th Signal Company is mourning the heartbreaking loss of SFC Paul Welby, a respected Soldier, leader, husband, father, and friend who passed away Friday following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Welby had been fighting the disease for more than a year, yet those who served alongside him say he continued to put others first. As the company’s full-time Readiness NCO, he remained committed to his Soldiers and his responsibilities until just days before his passing.
Colleagues who spoke with him during his final week said his positive attitude remained unmistakable. Despite the challenges he was facing, Welby continued to be himself—encouraging others, helping his Soldiers, and carrying out the work he cared deeply about.
For those who knew him for years, his loss is especially difficult. Friends remember Welby as someone whose personality, humor, generosity, and willingness to help others made him stand out wherever he served.
His love of football also brought plenty of memorable conversations with those around him. A devoted Buffalo Bills fan and Notre Dame supporter, Welby enjoyed friendly football debates with friends and fellow Soldiers, creating memories that will now be cherished by those left behind.
Welby’s service extended far beyond his military duties. He was remembered as a devoted husband and father to Jaxon and Elaina, as well as a loving son, family member, mentor, and friend.
Within the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, colleagues said Welby seemed to know people throughout the organization and was always willing to lend a hand. His leadership and compassion left a lasting impression on the Soldiers he supported.
