BELZONI, Miss. — The Humphreys County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of JaKamryn Price, 16, an 11th-grade student and Humphreys County High School football player who was fatally shot Friday night following a football scrimmage in Belzoni.
Authorities identified Price as the victim of the homicide, which occurred near the 300 block of Third Street shortly after Humphreys County hosted its Friday night football event.
Price was a member of the Humphreys County Cowboys football team, where he played tight end and defensive end. His sudden death has left teammates, classmates, coaches, teachers, friends, and family members facing the devastating reality of a young life lost far too soon.
At just 16 years old, Price was still in the early chapters of his life, with school, football, friendships, and a future ahead of him. His death has brought grief well beyond his immediate family as the community comes together to remember a student-athlete whose life mattered to so many.
The Belzoni Police Department is leading the homicide investigation, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. As of Sunday morning, authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest. Investigators also had not released additional information about what led to the shooting.
The Humphreys County School District has announced additional grief counseling and support services for students and staff affected by Price’s death.
A community town hall focused on violence and crime is scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the O.M. McNair Middle School gymnasium, giving residents an opportunity to come together amid the grief and concern surrounding the tragedy.
There are few words capable of explaining the loss of a 16-year-old whose life should have continued to unfold through football games, school days, friendships, family moments, and dreams for the future.
As investigators work to determine what happened, Price’s family, teammates, classmates, and friends are left to mourn and hold onto the memories of the young man they knew.
