WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Va. — A tragic water rescue operation ended in heartbreak Monday afternoon after a missing boater was recovered from the waters near Sharks Tooth Island in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

The incident began at approximately 2:25 p.m. on August 3, 2026, when emergency dispatchers received reports of a male who had gone missing in the water after entering the area without wearing a life jacket. Authorities immediately launched a large-scale search involving multiple fire and rescue agencies, aviation resources, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to emergency officials, Boat 5 arrived on scene at approximately 2:41 p.m. and deployed side-scan sonar to assist in locating the missing individual. Rescue crews conducted multiple search patterns throughout the area before identifying a possible location beneath the water’s surface.

At approximately 3:55 p.m., the victim was recovered by Boat 5 just offshore of Sharks Tooth Island in Virginia waters.

The individual was transported to the Virginia shoreline, where custody was transferred to Virginia law enforcement authorities. Officials have not yet publicly released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.
