Tenn. — Family, friends, and the Columbia community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Mekhius Williams, a 20-year-old man who died in a tragic drowning accident on the Buffalo River on Saturday, August 1.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Williams was enjoying the day kayaking and swimming with family and friends when the tragedy unfolded.
Authorities said Williams attempted to cross the river but was overtaken by the fast-moving current. He disappeared beneath the water, prompting an immediate emergency response.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. Multiple agencies joined the search and recovery effort, including Wayne County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), and the Lawrenceburg Fire Department Dive Team.
After an extensive search, responders recovered Williams’ body from the river.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office has requested an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Investigators have stated that no foul play is suspected, and the incident appears to be a tragic accident.
Williams’ sudden passing has left his family and loved ones devastated as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon.
The tragedy has also deeply affected the first responders who worked tirelessly during the recovery operation, as well as the community members who have expressed condolences and support for the grieving family.
