DELAWARE COUNTY, INDIANA — A Delaware County community is mourning after a man died in what authorities described as a tragic accident involving a riding lawn mower near the Windsor area, east of Muncie.
According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, to the 14300 block of East Stanley Road following reports of a possible water rescue.
When emergency crews arrived, they discovered a man in a creek pinned beneath a riding lawn mower. First responders immediately began working at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the preliminary investigation indicates the mower was being operated near a steep embankment when it slid over the edge, causing both the machine and the operator to fall into the water below.
“The incident appears to have been a tragic accident,” officials said, adding that there were no signs of foul play and no continuing threat to public safety.
The victim has not yet been publicly identified as authorities work to notify family members and complete the investigation.
