FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A pedestrian who died after being struck in a hit-and-run crash in Fairfax County Sunday night has been identified, as police continue searching for the driver who fled the scene.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers responded around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, to the intersection of Old Keene Mill Road and Backlick Road in Springfield for reports of a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.
Detectives with the department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit determined the pedestrian was walking from north to south across Old Keene Mill Road toward Backlick Road, mid-block and outside of a crosswalk, when a white SUV traveling eastbound in the right travel lane struck him. Police say the driver continued from the scene without stopping.
The pedestrian has been identified by police as 44-year-old Thomas Gum. Police listed Gum as having no fixed address. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Detectives are now actively continuing to search for the driver of the white SUV as the investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing. Police say speed and alcohol are also being investigated as potential factors in the crash.
Fairfax County Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash, has dashcam footage from the area of Old Keene Mill Road around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, or has information about a white SUV with possible front-end damage to come forward.
