A heartbreaking search-and-rescue effort in San Joaquin County has ended in tragedy after authorities recovered the body of 17-year-old Gabriel Santiago, who went missing in the Stanislaus River over the weekend.
Emergency crews were called Saturday afternoon to Caswell Memorial State Park after receiving reports of a swimmer in distress. The Manteca Fire Department responded to the scene as the Ripon Consolidated Fire Department was already assisting with a vegetation fire.
According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, Santiago was rafting when he entered the water, went underwater, and did not resurface. Multiple agencies immediately began searching the river and surrounding shoreline, continuing efforts into the evening before returning Sunday morning to resume the mission.
The search tragically became a recovery operation when crews located and recovered Santiago’s body Sunday afternoon.
Family members identified the teenager as Gabriel Santiago, remembering him as a kind, loving son who brought joy to those around him. His mother shared that Gabriel had been spending time with friends when the devastating incident occurred, leaving loved ones struggling with an unimaginable loss.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the drowning with assistance from the Boating Safety Unit, drone team, and Ripon Fire personnel. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
As news of Gabriel’s passing spreads, family, friends, and community members are coming together to remember a young life taken far too soon.
