A Minneapolis family is demanding answers and accountability after a Black father was allegedly shot while doing yard work outside his own home, leaving him with life-threatening and life-altering injuries.
According to court documents and witness accounts, David Matore was trimming a tree when a bullet allegedly came from an upstairs window of a neighboring home. The gunfire reportedly struck Matore in the neck before traveling toward his spine.
Matore also suffered broken ribs and a concussion in the incident, according to reports. What began as an ordinary day of caring for his family’s home quickly became a terrifying ordeal that left him fighting to recover from serious injuries.
The shooting has sparked additional concern because Matore and his wife say they had been living in fear for months before the incident. According to Matore, the couple contacted police approximately 19 times to report alleged harassment, hate speech, and verbal threats involving the same neighbor.
The suspect, identified as John Shoshak, has been charged with attempted murder. However, authorities have reportedly not yet taken him into custody, saying they consider him a potential threat to himself and others and do not want to risk a violent confrontation.
The situation has left Matore’s family frustrated and searching for answers about whether more could have been done before the shooting occurred. Matore has said he believes the police department failed his family by not taking action to remove the alleged threat when previous warnings were made.
The case has also prompted broader questions about how reports of threats, harassment, and intimidation are handled and whether victims receive adequate protection before violence occurs. For Matore’s family, those questions are deeply personal.
