TOLEDO, OHIO — The Toledo community is mourning the tragic loss of Richard Villolovos, 58, who was killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash early Monday morning on West Bancroft Street.
According to the Toledo Police Department, the devastating collision occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Bancroft Street, between Detroit Avenue and Upton Avenue. The crash involved two Dodge Ram pickup trucks.
Authorities identified Villolovos, a Toledo resident, as the driver of one of the vehicles. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The force of the collision caused Villolovos’ pickup truck to burst into flames, while the second truck overturned in the roadway. Villolovos and a 56-year-old passenger were reportedly trapped inside the burning vehicle as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Toledo police officers immediately attempted to rescue the trapped passenger from the engulfed truck. The rescue was described as extremely dangerous, with the intense heat reportedly causing one first responder’s protective gloves to melt during the effort to pull the passenger to safety.
The passenger was successfully rescued and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been released.
The driver of the second Dodge Ram, also a Toledo resident, was injured in the collision and taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities have not released that driver’s identity or provided an update on their condition.
The crash forced the closure of West Bancroft Street for more than four hours as police and crash investigators worked to document the scene and gather evidence. The roadway was reopened at approximately 5:45 a.m.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the two vehicles to collide, and officials have not released information regarding possible contributing factors.
