POWELL, OHIO — A heartbreaking river tragedy in Delaware County has claimed the lives of five adults and left two children in protective custody after a desperate rescue attempt on the Scioto River ended in multiple drownings.
The tragedy unfolded Sunday, July 19, after a motorist reportedly spotted a terrified and distressed child running along a highway at approximately 9 p.m. The alarming discovery prompted a call to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, leading deputies to a devastating scene involving a group of family and friends who had been spending time near the Scioto River.
According to authorities, the group had gathered near the river in the Powell area when one adult entered the water to swim. The person soon began struggling and appeared to be in distress.
In an effort to help, additional members of the group entered the river. However, those who attempted the rescue also encountered difficulties in the water, setting off a tragic chain of events that ultimately claimed five lives.
Rescue crews launched an extensive search operation after emergency personnel were notified. Two female victims were recovered from the river Sunday and transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Search teams returned to the river as the recovery operation continued. Three additional victims, all male, were subsequently recovered from the water.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the five adults who died. Officials also have not disclosed the exact relationship between the victims and the two children who were placed into protective custody.
The circumstances surrounding the children being found and the events that preceded the drownings remain under investigation.
