ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA — The Asheville community is mourning the tragic loss of Tremane Williams, one of two people killed in a deadly mass shooting early Sunday morning on Biltmore Avenue in downtown Asheville that also left seven others injured.
According to the Asheville Police Department (APD), officers responded at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, to the 250 block of Biltmore Avenue after receiving multiple reports of gunfire and several people suffering from gunshot wounds.
When officers arrived, they found multiple victims injured throughout the area. Police immediately began providing emergency medical assistance until crews from the Asheville Fire Department and Buncombe County EMS arrived to assist.
Despite lifesaving efforts, two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities identified one of those victims as Tremane Williams, while the identity of the second victim remains pending notification of family members.
Seven additional victims were transported to Mission Hospital for medical treatment. Asheville Police Interim Chief Jackie Stepp said five of the injured victims were reported to be in stable condition, while two remained hospitalized receiving further care.
Investigators said the shooting happened as many people were leaving nearby bars and restaurants following closing hours. Authorities believe a large crowd had gathered in the area when gunfire erupted.
“This was a large and complex crime scene,” police officials said, noting that detectives recovered numerous shell casings and other evidence while processing the area.
Chief Stepp stated that investigators do not believe the shooting was random and that evidence suggests the incident may be connected to a previous gun violence investigation.
“We do think that this was not a random act of violence,” Chief Stepp said during a briefing.
Police have not released information about possible suspects or a motive, but detectives continue working around the clock to identify those responsible and determine what led to the deadly confrontation.
