SOUTH BANK, England — The Teesside community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of PC Matthew Blades, known affectionately as “Matty,” one of two Cleveland Police officers killed in a devastating crash while carrying out his duties in the early hours of Saturday, August 22.
Matthew, 37, was among seven people who lost their lives following a fatal collision involving a marked Cleveland Police armed response vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat near South Bank. Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller confirmed that PC Blades and fellow officer PC Tom Clough, 38, died as a result of the crash.
Beyond his service as a police officer, Matty was remembered as a devoted family man and a valued member of the local football community. Seaton Carew FC paid tribute to the officer, who had recently joined the club as a coach and was preparing for his first season working with the club’s new U7 Seahawks team.
The club shared that Matty was especially excited about coaching his own son and being part of his football journey.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that Seaton Carew FC shares the devastating news of the passing of one of our coaches, Matty,” the club said in a statement, describing him as someone who had quickly become a cherished part of the football family.
Matty and his oldest son were also described as beloved members of the club’s U10 Lions football family. Tributes highlighted his kindness, dedication, and the joy he brought to those around him.
The club extended its deepest condolences to Matty’s wife, his two sons, extended family, friends, and his colleagues within Cleveland Police, who are grieving the loss of two officers who served their community.
As a mark of respect, Seaton Carew FC lowered its flags to half-mast in honor of Matty and all those lost in the tragedy.
While investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash, the community is coming together to remember a man who dedicated his life to protecting others and supporting young people through football.
